After powerful storms drenched SoCal to start the month, another “extended storm event” is set to move into the area, the National Weather Service says.
Heavy rain and high elevation snow are forecast to begin on Saturday, according to NWS, with the strongest impacts being felt Sunday through Tuesday.
Between two and five inches of rain and up to eight inches of snow are expected.
In addition, damaging wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour will be accompanied by high surf, posing the risk of coastal flooding, weather officials said.
To prepare for this round of rain, the city of Rancho Palos Verdes has extended their emergency declaration by at least 60 days; earlier this week, the community’s historic Wayfarers Chapel announced it would be closing indefinitely due to the oversaturated land continuing to shift and slide.
“This landslide has created havoc in the City of Rancho Palos Verdes,” said Ara Mihranian, Rancho Palos Verdes City Manager. “The heavy rains of winter 2023, the rain from last weekend and what’s anticipated in the forecast for the coming weekend is going to exacerbate this condition.”
One man told KTLA on Friday night that a large crack in the sidewalk near his home has grown exponentially since the record-breaking rainfall, exemplifying the effects of the deluge on the coastal community where land movement has already been a hazard for years.
“You just have to bear with it, and hopefully your house doesn’t slide down the hill,” he said.
In Los Angeles, the city will be operating an assistance center for Angelenos impacted by recent storms at the Pan Pacific Senior Activity Center beginning Saturday at 11 a.m. More information can be found here.
Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to have an emergency kit ready in case of an evacuation order.
The latest storm is forecast to move out of the Southland by Wednesday.
