LOS ANGELES CHARGERS HEAD COACH JIM HARBAUGH
“Yeah, we got outplayed and we beat ourselves in all three phases. It’s not going to go well when those two things occur.”
On player evaluation and standouts:
“Yeah, I’m sure there is, I can think of some in particular. Just more concentrating right now on how to rebounding, fixing [and] regrouping.”
On QB Trey Lance and QB DJ Uiagalelei:
“Some of the better plays were called back for illegal formation or the two guys in motion at times. Just, sloppy, you know. Pre-snap, post-snap. Hard to evaluate the quarterbacks when that kind of error is taking place.”
On competition for backup QB:
“I think it’s tight. I don’t have a definitive status on it right now.”
On WR Brenen Thompson:
“We had a few guys that went out in the game and he kind of understands it’s preseason. I don’t know who could have gone back or kept playing, but we’re going to lean toward the side of taking them out of the game. And we’ll have an inventory tomorrow.”
On Kyle Shanahan’s coaching:
“An elite coach. Proof’s in the pudding. Done a tremendous job.”
On the 49ers punt return touchdown in the second quarter:
“The punt was short and in the middle and we got outflanked.”
On P JK Scott’s defense for the 49ers punt return touchdown in the second quarter:
“No, he’s got to plan, when he’s in that position, to make a tackle. So, we need to work on it, coach up.”
On T Rashawn Slater, WR Tre’ Harris and OLB Akheem Mesidor returning from injury:
“I think so. I think [C/G] Rashawn [Slater], [WR] Tre’ [Harris], [OLB] Akheem [Mesidor] will be back this weekend.”
On the starting offensive line:
“I mean, the three plays that they were in there. Our offense line. It’s kind of hard to judge on the three plays.
On giving the starting O-line more time on the field:
“No, we had a plan. That was one series. Stuck to it.”
On his overall evaluation of the performance:
“I think we have a lot of things to work on. Like I said, in a big way, beat ourselves both offensively, defensively, some special teams, all three phases.”
On LB Junior Colson’s interception:
“Yeah, Junior. That was big. Made a good drop. Got to the spot and caught the ball and put it in the end zone. Really happy for him.”
On how confident he feels about Jake Slaughter at center:
“Yes. I mean, every time he’s been in a game. Every time he’s had to go in there. He’s a football player. That’s what he’s showing us, and he’s got the ability to process and his athleticism, his strength. It’s all plus plus.”
On C Tyler Biadasz:
“Just not putting a label on it. It’s not promising, it’s an ACL. Let’s make the decision on whether that’s a season ending thing, that’s the determination we made.”
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS HEAD COACH KYLE SHANAHAN
Opening Statement:
“We’ll get more imaging on it tomorrow and see if he pulled a muscle around the knee. Not an ACL. We’re going to find out for sure exactly what it was tomorrow, maybe a hamstring.”
On [RB] Patick Taylor Jr.:
“He got his abductor in practice.”
On [WR] Jacob Cowing’s punt return:
“I thought it was huge. I know he lost the first one in the light, which was a big disappointment. It was about a 30 yard change of field position a little frustrated there, but he lost it and he definitely redeemed himself in the next one an 80 yard, a good kind of play. He’s always shown us his talent since he’s been here and he’s been on the string together a couple of healthy weeks. That’s a huge play in the game.”
On [RB] Kaelon Black:
“I was really happy with him. Seeing him for his first practice or Tuesday versus the Chargers, you could see it a little bit and thought nothing changed today. He ran real physical. We’d love to keep him in there a little bit longer, but with being his second day back, we were smart with him. I think he’s pretty sure he got out healthy.”
On the scoring run:
“I thought his run was great. It was blocked well, but then he’s the one who finished it. We had an explosive run like that to distance the pile. I was happy with all the guys right.”
On the quarterbacks:
“I mean, we [QB Brock Purdy] moved the ball decent. You know, we would’ve liked to go down and score. I don’t think we actually crossed the 50 on it. We ended up having 12 plays. He [Purdy] converted three third downs, which was big. But then though he’d get two drives, but I think it was 12 plays. We took him out after that. [QB] Mac [Jones] came in. We didn’t really want him to go into the third. Missed a couple throws, also had a touchdown — that was a pretty good throw. This trip just didn’t drop. But then [QB] Adrian [Martinez] came in. I know he had those two picks, second one I thought was unfortunate. He was trying to make him play down the sidelines, but just got beat to it.”
On [WR] De’Zhaun Stribling:
“I mean, that’s his strength is his hands. It was one that [QB] Mac [Jones] let go really early when you called [inaudible] down there, you’d get the catch. He’s got the ability to do it, so he needs to come down with it more.”
On [WR] De’Zhaun Stribling’s blocking ability:
“I think he’s getting better at it. He’s got the mentality to do it, he’s smart enough to do it, he’s committed to doing it, he’s got the size to do it. But now it’s about different situations, it’s not just about blocking ownership. It’s how do you handle defensive ends at times, linebackers. I don’t know how he did today in that aspect, he’s been getting better in practice. But, fully expect him to be good this season.”
On the position battle at left guard:
“It’s going to go down to the wire. It seemed like both of those guys did good today. Hopefully we have some good news with [OL Austen Pleasants’ injury]. I know he got good reps today at tackle and at guard, but the other guys got to play a lot, too, which will be good for those guys.
On [CB] Jack Jones’ performance:
“I think it’s a step forward, we’re trying to do that in practice each week. He had a couple big plays in practice on Tuesday, and we pretty much shut them down today, so pretty proud of those guys. [CB] Jack [Jones] made some huge plays [today] and in practice too, making a bunch of plays on in-breaking routs and not getting beat deep.
On the play [CB] Jack Jones made in the end zone to break up a would-be touchdown pass:
“[CB] Jack [Jones] made a great play on the ball. It seemed like every time they went to Jack, he knocked the ball down. He just continued to do what he’d been doing throughout the game.”
On the pass rush without [DL] Nick Bosa and [DL] Mykel Williams:
“We knew we were going to go some time without those guys. We’re getting [DL Nick] Bosa back from Australia, and he’ll get better as the year goes on. I know we’ve been going to a lot of younger guys, especially on the interior line. I know [CB] Renardo [Green] has gotten a lot of playing time, he’s been able to stay healthy in camp. He’s been really encouraging. I also think just schematically, he had to do a number of different things. Not just relying on the four-man rush. I think there’s some stuff we’re getting better at.”
On if the left guard position battle in the regular season:
“Possibly. The guys who are battling haven’t had a consistent three weeks to do it, with [OL] Carver [Willis] coming back after missing those first two weeks. [OL] Robert Jones is out. So, all those guys are in the battle, including [OL] Connor Colby. He’s been getting a lot of reps there too. All those guys are in the battle, we’ve got to pick one for week one, so hopefully one of them will separate themselves and make [the decision] easier on us. Week one is just week one, the [competition] never stops.
On if [WR Jacob Cowing is the primary punt returner moving forward:
“Not yet, but, I like that he’s making it [the decision] a little easier.”
On the biggest learning curve for [OL] Carver Willis:
“I mean, it’s just getting used to I think working with the center, going against some different players. It’s blocking the guys, blocking the guy, but a lot more happens inside. Tackles can kind of be on an island, play some heavier edge rushers and stuff like that. When you go inside, there’s a lot more going on schematically and stuff like that. That’s one of the things we liked about him. He’s a real smart player and that seem too big for him.”
