Front Row for Black Press at Rose Bowl

By Kenneth Miller|Publisher

There were more that 245 approved media credentials for the 2026 Rose Bowl game featuring Alabama and Indiana for the CFP Quarterfinal match-up in Pasadena, and the Black press was well represented on the front row.

As the dynamics of what is considered media has dramatically shifted from traditional weekly publications to online websites, social media accounts and podcast, the number of Black Press which was already squeezed out in favor of corporate sponsors has consistently seen their members impacted when it comes to receiving accreditation.

However, to the Rose Bowl credit they managed to not just get it right in regards to Black press, but also providing front row seating for many of them, including South Bay Black Journal.

I broke into this business in 1977 at the Los Angeles Sentinel under the late Brad Pye, Jr. who along with the late Brock Brockenberry was responsible for integrating the Coliseum Press Box, so I take the responsibility of being accredited for events seriously.

However, as many of the sports leagues have partnered with outlets such as ESPN, it has diminished the number of credentials allotted to Black publications.
