On Saturday, Nov. 1, the day after millions of Los Angelenos and Americans across the nation did not receive CalFresh, SNAP or Food Stamp benefits, the Los Angeles Food Bank served 5,000 families enough food to feed a family of three for one week, from 10:00 am to1:00 pm. Prairie Avenue was lined-up with automobiles from Century Boulevard, north to Manchester Boulevard where they entered the parking lot of the KIA Form, to receive their food donations.

David May, Director of Marketing for the LA Foodbank, was on hand to direct the 100 volunteers who had established six lanes for vehicles to enter and receive the food donation. “Our primary goal is to ensure that no one goes hungry,” May said. “Along with our 600 partner agencies and the Feeding America Network, the LA Foodbank responds throughout the region by providing fruits, vegetables and meat protein to families.

The distribution at the KIA Forum consisted of a total of $300,000 worth of donated and purchased food, which amounted to $60.00 worth of food per household. The kit build breakdown consisted of disaster kits, apples, potatoes, carrots, chicken drumsticks, assorted yogurt, cff frozen tortillas, oatmeal, long grain white rice, chunk light tuna in water, canned garbanzo beans, peanut butter, green beans, fruit mixed in juice, pasta sauce, and chicken noodle soup.

May added, ” there are nearly one million Los Angeles County households not receiving their CalFresh benefits starting today and we have numerous food pantry partners distributing food throughout the region and while our effort today is a big help, we need a resolution in Washington D.C., to ensure benefits are delivered to CalFresh households.”

May acknowledged the swift and hearty support the LA Foodbank received from the Los Angeles Clippers when they agreed to provide the venue for the food distribution on Saturday. “They have been a terrific partner,” he said. He concluded by indicating that individuals who are hungry can locate available food banks by logging on to lafoodbank.org/findfood or by dialing 211.

No one should be hungry!
