Southern Scribes: A Sitdown with LA Phillips

STATESBORO – This month we are asking each member of our Georgia Southern athletic training staff to participate in a Q &A session for Athletic Training Appreciation Month. We will learn more about athletic training and more about the experiences of our athletic trainers and all the work they do for us behind the scenes!

Loriann “LA” Phillips is up next in our highlights. LA is an assistant athletic trainer working with volleyball and rifle.

What is something about athletic training people often don’t know?

“The broad spectrum of skills and knowledge athletic trainers have. There is so much that goes into our profession taking care of the athletes each and every day. Oftentimes we are the first to show up and the last to leave on a day-to-day basis.”

What is your favorite part about being an athletic trainer?

“Developing relationships with the athletes and watching them grow and develop both as athletes and individuals throughout their career. I love being able to support them through the good and the bad of being a student-athlete.”

What is a treatment you like but don’t get us as often/your favorite treatment?

“Dry needling is my favorite treatment.”

What is your favorite thing about working with your sport(s)?

“Rifle is a very unique sport that many people do not know much about. I enjoyed getting to learn something new when I first started working with this team. I’m constantly challenged working with them, so it keeps me on my toes having to be creative with their treatment plans. It helps that we break records and win championships ;).

“The culture of GSU volleyball is amazing. It’s a great group of young women and the coaching staff are great to work for.”

Fun Fact:

“I’ve been able to see the Northern Lights and one of the seven wonders of the world (Iguazu Falls) traveling with teams.”
