LOS ANGELES, CA — With its acres of wild, mountainous terrain, Griffith Park is an inextricable part of the city of Los Angeles. But did you know the park extends south from the Santa Monica Mountains and into the urban jungle of LA?
It’s located south of Los Feliz Boulevard, bounded by the 5 Freeway and Riverside Drive, and includes soccer fields, tennis courts, a pool and an adult community center. It’s well loved by residents for its amenities, but Councilwoman Nithya Raman says some revitalization could be in order.
“We have the opportunity to bring this area back to life, and create a truly multifunctional and intergenerational community space for everyone to enjoy,” Raman wrote in a Wednesday newsletter.
Raman recently introduced a City Council motion that seeks to kickstart the effort of creating a master plan for this portion of the park. If approved, officials would work to inventory existing facilities, address current challenges and suggest ideas for “vibrant, creative, sustainable, and intergenerational uses” for the park’s infrastructure, she wrote.
The plan would also explore the construction of a permanent Griffith Park Adult Community Center, which has been housed in temporary construction trailers for over a decade, according to the motion.
The plan would include community outreach to determine what residents want to see from the park’s revitalization.
Raman’s motion, if approved by the council, seeks to earmark $250,000 in existing federal funding for the master plan. Introduced in November, Raman’s motion is set to be considered first by a council subcommittee before being voted on by the full council at a to-be-determined date.
