How the LA fires damaged Altadena’s historic Black community

The January fires in the Los Angeles area devastated communities across Southern California. Among the worst hit was the historic Black community of Altadena. It was one of the first neighborhoods in Southern California where Black families were allowed to buy homes, becoming a haven for Black families, professionals, and creatives.

Many of those who long called the place home have now lost everything. Among them is Adonis Jones Jr., known as Coach AD to many in the area for his decades of sports activity. Jones Jr. and his daughter Rochele Jones speak to host Asma Khalid about their community’s history and loss.

This segment aired on February 17, 2025.
