Derby Day Extravaganza set for April 5 at Santa Anita Great Race Course

ARCADIA, CA —The 88th running of the Grade I, $500,000 Santa Anita Derby on Saturday, April 5 will offer fans of all ages world class racing and an array of family friendly events, beginning with the annual Derby Day 5k Run & Walk at 8 a.m. PT. On-track fans at Santa Anita can enjoy the Infield Spring Carnival, which is easily accessed by entering Gate 6 off of Colorado Place on Santa Anita’s northern perimeter. The Spring Carnival attractions include a Ferris Wheel, Bumper Cars, Yo-Yo, Roller Coaster, carnival games, food, pony rides, and more. Purchase tickets online to save with an Unlimited Ride Wristband and the Family Four Pack. The Compton Cowboys will be on hand to promote its Compton Jr. Equestrian program and its positive effect on the community. The Compton Cowboys will be in the Infield where fans can meet the Cowboys and their horses. After the races, fans can enjoy a special performance from Randy Savvy in the Infield. The trackside apron will host a Craft Beer Festival where fans can enjoy cold craft brews while cheering on Santa Anita’s hopefuls for this year’s Kentucky Derby. Food trucks will also be stationed around the Kingsbury Fountain to add to one of Santa Anita’s biggest days of the year. The popular Santa Anita Derby Party in the Chandelier Room presented by Don Julio offers guests in the legendary room with tequila tasting and food offerings designed by Santa Anita’s Executive Chefs, plus music and complimentary cigars. Supporting stakes on the Santa Anita Derby undercard include the GII, $200,000 Fasig-Tipton Santa Anita Oaks at 1 1/16 miles and the GIII, $100,000 Monrovia Stakes presented by Kettle One for older fillies and mares on the hillside turf course. Two stakes for California-breds are also on tap. They are $125,000 Echo Eddie for 3-year-olds and $125,000 Evening Jewel presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance for 3-year-old fillies. The Echo Eddie and Evening Jewel are both six and a half furlongs on dirt.
