Coach Altenberg was a 2023 Chargers Coach of the Week winner and was nominated by C.I.F. for the Los Angeles County Coach of the Year Award. Coach Altenberg’s coaching of over 25 years at Serra HS is marked by exceptional achievements, with an impressive record of 219 wins and a coaching philosophy that extends beyond the gridiron. A distinctive aspect of Coach Altenberg’s legacy is his support for the growth of girls’ flag football. A passionate proponent of inclusivity, he played a pivotal role in initiating the girls’ flag football program at Junipero Serra High School. His vision and dedication to expanding the sport’s reach underline his commitment to providing opportunities for all. The NFL will select two winners, one from each conference (AFC/NFC). These winners will be honored at the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl LVIII. Nike supports this program by providing the two Don Shula Award winners with $10,000 each, and their high school football programs each with $15,000. Additionally, the other 30 finalists will receive $1,000.
