Baton Rouge, surrounding areas announce school closures, changes for severe cold weather

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – With extreme cold weather forecasted to pass through Louisiana, some school districts are deciding to cancel classes or move to remote learning on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

School officials made the following announcements about cancellations or changes to online learning:

Diocese of Baton Rouge:

  • All Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Parents are encouraged to check school communications for instructions for virtual learning that might be assigned by their children’s schools.

Universities

  • Louisiana State University will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, due to the weather. All classes are canceled. The closure includes the University Lab School, the LSU Early Childhood Education Lab Preschool, and the LSU Law Center. The LSU Vet School will communicate separately with its students and employees about hospitals and academic operations.
  • Southern University’s Baton Rouge campuses will cancel all classes, and employees will work remotely on Tuesday, Jan. 16 due to the forecast of inclement weather. This includes Southern University and A&M College, Southern University Law Center, Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center, and Southern University Laboratory School. Normal operations are expected to resume on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
  • BRCC announced that all educational sites will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16. All classes and activities are canceled. BRCC plans to re-open and resume normal business operations on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
  • Southeastern Louisiana University will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16. The university is scheduled to re-open on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
  • The Pennington Biomedical Research Center will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, because of the weather. Essential employees must check in with their supervisors and report as instructed.

Ascension Parish:

  • Ascension Parish Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, because of the weather. As of now, the plan is to resume normal operations and re-open schools on Wednesday, Jan. 17. However, officials will assess the condition of school buildings and will provide updates should anything change.

Assumption Parish

  • Assumption Parish Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, and will re-open on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

East Baton Rouge Parish

  • East Baton Rouge Parish School System schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16 due to freezing conditions. There will not be virtual classes.
  • Zachary Community School District will transition to at-home learning on Tuesday, Jan. 16. All schools and offices will be closed, and after-school activities canceled.
  • Zachary Christian Academy will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, because of the weather.
  • Central Community School System schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, due to the uncertainty of overnight winter weather conditions. School officials said they plan to resume all classes on Wednesday, Jan. 17 but will monitor the weather and make additional announcements if needed.
  • City of Baker School System schools will have a virtual learning day on Tuesday, Jan. 16, due to extreme temperatures.
  • Dalton Elementary School, Lanier Elementary School, and Zion City School (formerly Glen Oaks Middle School) will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, due to the weather.
  • BASIS Baton Rouge – Materra Campus will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
  • McKanstry Preparatory School in Central will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16 due to possible winter weather.
  • GEO Prep schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16 due to projected freezing conditions. There will be no virtual classes.
  • South Baton Rouge Charter will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, due to inclement weather.
  • Parkview Baptist School will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
  • Inspire Charter Academy will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16 due to inclement weather.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Christian Academy will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16 due to the severe weather forecast.
  • Louisiana School for the Deaf and the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired will be closed for day students on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Essential staff should report for residential students on campus.
  • Episcopal School of Baton Rouge will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, due to sub-freezing temperatures and the potential for icy road conditions. All middle and upper school students should check CANVAS for instructions regarding academic expectations. Classes should resume on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
  • Central Private School will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, including all afterschool activities.
  • IDEA Public Schools are closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, due to inclement weather.
  • Brighton School in Baton Rouge will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16 due to winter weather.
  • Catholic High School will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, due to the hazardous weather conditions expected for the Baton Rouge area. While there will be no in-person class, students will still be responsible for any classwork assigned on this day.
  • St. Joseph’s Academy will have a virtual school day on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Teachers and students will teach and learn from home.
  • Jones Creek Adventist Academy will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
  • The Dunham School, including the Dunham Early Childhood Center, will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, Middle and upper school students will have an e-day.
  • The Baton Rouge Christian Academy will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, due to the weather.
  • Impact Charter School will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Teachers will communicate assignment requirements.
  • Hosanna Christian Academy will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
  • Redemptorist St. Gerard School will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

East Feliciana Parish

  • East Feliciana Public Schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16. They will continue to monitor the weather and consult with parish emergency management officials.
  • Slaughter Community Charter School will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16. SCCS will have a virtual day.
  • Silliman Institute in Clinton is closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Iberville Parish

  • Iberville Parish School District schools and offices will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 16, and Wednesday, Jan. 17, due to possible freezing temperatures and weather conditions. The school board will implement the short-term modified operations of the District’s Continuous Learning Plan. More details are available here.

Livingston Parish

  • Livingston Parish Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, due to the weather.

Pointe Coupee Parish

St. Helena Parish

  • The St. Helena Parish School District will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

St. Mary Parish

  • St. Mary Parish Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16. School officials will continue to monitor potential weather concerns, but expect to return to normal school hours on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Tangipahoa Parish

  • All schools and district offices in the Tangipahoa Parish School System will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, due to the weather.

West Baton Rouge Parish

  • West Baton Rouge Parish Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16. A decision on holding classes on Wednesday, Jan 17, will be made on Tuesday.
  • Holy Family School in West Baton Rouge Parish (Port Allen) will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

West Feliciana Parish

  • West Feliciana Parish School District schools are closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16. There will be no classes or virtual school work.
